Watch this if you liked: “Kung Fu Hustle”

Instead of the usual mobster movie with themes that are violent, bloody and horrible, "Kungfu Tootsie" on the other hand is funny and enjoyable for almost everyone. It has a lot of unexpected humour, with transvestites and gays permeating the central storyline. Although there are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments in every scene, most of the deadpan jokes are for those who can read between the lines.

"Kung Fu Tootsie" is a story about many gangster families fighting to be the ultimate gang (which is quite similar to "The Godfather" movies) but neatly throws in lot of "Kung Fu Hustle" moments. From the kind of slapstick we get here, the influence of Stephen Chow is unmistakably present.

From the lowest ranking punk in the clan to the biggest head honcho in the hierarchy, each character is beautifully crafted so as to paint a complete picture. Their costumes differentiate associates from bosses. Apart from the colourful costumes, the characters are well developed, although it is rather confusing in the beginning. However, each confusing moment arises only for the story to address it and nothing is left out.

Another bonus point for "Kung Fu Tootsie" is the camerawork, which this reviewer thinks should be applauded. The director's effort in experimenting and using natural lighting to execute a certain shot or a certain effect is just plain awesome.

However, the downside of this movie is the seemingly endless cuts of 'important' scenes. The inconvenient trimming of these scenes is rather annoying when done too often. Well, let's just hope that the audience understand what is going on but this reviewer is happy enough with what we get.
