Watch this if you liked: “17 Again”, “The Sixth Sense”

Veering away from the comedic feel of "17 Again", director Burr Steers teams up again with Zac Efron to bring forward the message that blood is thicker than water in the poignant piece that is "Charlie St. Cloud".

Charlie St. Cloud (Zac Efron) has a bright future in front of him, being an accomplished sailor and getting a scholarship to an Ivy League college. He is also a beloved brother to Sam (Charlie Tahan); they do almost everything together. But tragedy strikes, and Sam is taken too soon. Not being able to let go, Charlie forgoes his dreams and stays in a 'world' where he and his brother are still together. Fast forward a few years, he meets with a former classmate Tess (Amanda Crew) and develops a relationship with her, causing him to be torn between letting go of his past and moving forward with the future.

Based on a critically acclaimed novel, "Charlie St. Cloud" explores a lot on the loss of a loved one. It asks the questions: How does one cope with loss, especially when it is sudden and unexpected? When do we let go and move forward? If we do finally let go, does it mean that we forget that person? Still, even with these heavy questions, the film doesn't drag. Director Steers balances the heavy subjects with heartwarming scenes of brotherhood, love and hope. A little twist in the story brings a rather quirky look at life as well, but as a whole "Charlie St. Cloud" delivers the message of devotion well.

For those who are quick to dismiss this film as a plot to make more money out of teen heartthrob Zac Efron, prepare to be surprised as Efron delivers a rather strong performance as the titular character. Yes, he is still cute as always but he definitely came a long way from the singing and slick dance moves in the "High School Musical" franchise. He brings much depth in becoming the older brother who holds on dearly to memories of his sibling. His camaraderie with newcomer Charlie Tahan (last seen in "I Am Legend") is amazing to watch; we can easily recognize that kind of bond in our own relationships with our siblings. Tahan is also very memorable as the affable younger brother who thinks the world of his elder brother.

Give this a go if you have siblings. It is a great watch to relive the times together with your brothers or sisters, even if it tugs at your heartstrings most of the time.
