Subash to shoot "Syirik"

M. Subash: "Syirik" is about the practice of deviationist teachings in a small village
28 Jul - It looks like our rising director/actor/writer M. Subash has yet to give up his passion for a film. Despite the poor response towards his debut feature "Pensil" earlier (it managed a measly RM36,000 in collections) the 38-year-old looks upbeat as he announced his second venture with Genius Parade Sdn Bhd, a mystery-thriller titled "Syirik".

Caught at the film's press conference in FINAS recently (22 July), Subash explained, "My second baby will be completely different from ‘Pensil'. Although this movie still focuses on realism as the subject, the story is somewhat heavy – but with mystery and thriller elements. It's about the practice of deviationist teachings in a small village. It's actually inspired by true events which happened in my own family. However, I modified the script to make it more applicable to our society." He also boasted that "Syirik" will use a special filming technique that has never been done before, under the watchful eyes of the experienced Indera Che Muda, the man behind the cinematography in "Pensil".

As to the potentially sensitive title of the film, Subash said, "We are ready to deal with it should there be any controversy. If we have to change it, we will – but for now, this is the working title."

The producer, Surenthar, was also at hand to comment: "We are moving forward with 'Syirik' despite what happened to 'Pensil' because we want to strike while the iron is hot. We want to brand the company (Genius Parade) and establish Subash as a director."

The RM 400,000 film will also see Subash chancing it by introducing some newcomers as the main cast. Subash insisted, "What matters to me is the acting and not names. I believe that these newcomers can fit the roles if they are willing to learn and be passionate about it." Veteran Ruminah Sidek, or fondly known as Mak Mah, will play coach to the new actors.

The filming of "Syirik" is scheduled to begin this 25 August in several locations around Hulu Langat and Cheras, Selangor.
