Nightmare moms

Rather than talking about the usual happy-go-lucky movies you could have watched with your mother during her special day, we look into another angle for the recent Mother's Day. Here are some of the worst known mothers in fictional history, and you probably will be glad these mothers are not your own. Go give her a hug.

The Queen in "Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs" (1937)

The Queen in Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" is arguably the worst Disney (step) mother, but she faces tough competition when compared to the mother figures for princesses like Cinderella and even Rapunzel. But what set The Queen apart from the rest is how she would rather kill her stepdaughter just to be the fairest of them all.

If that is not horrific enough, when she finds out that Snow White is still alive, she is willing to turn into an ugly witch to give Snow White a poisoned apple so she could watch her die right in front of her.

Mrs. Bates in "Psycho" (1960)

Technically what we really should be afraid of is her son, Norman, as it was him who murdered all those victims all along. But Mrs. Bates can definitely be considered as one of the worst moms in movies as she kept her son Norman on a short and tough leash. She raised her son with cruelty and manipulation by forbidding him to have a life away from her, and teaching him that sex is evil and that all women, except her, are whores.

In return, Norman kept her dead body in the fruit cellar and dressed himself in her clothes as he murders his motel guests.

Margaret in "Carrie" (1976)

Margaret White is a religious psycho. Instead of being a supportive parent she instead torments her child Carrie, who has the power of telekinesis, into loving her. She thinks almost everything, especially things to do with the female body and sex, is sinful.

Margaret refused to let Carrie go to the prom, calling it an "occasion of sin". Later, believing that Carrie is possessed by the devil, Carrie's mom stabs her in the back, which, just like not letting her go to the prom, is unfair.

Joan Crawford in "Mommy Dearest" (1981)

Not only is this film famous for being about a nightmare mother, it is even more horrifying to think that this was a supposedly true account of how actress Joan Crawford treated her daughter, based on that daughter's memoirs, published in 1978. She claimed that Joan suffered from alcoholism, and tried to strangle her in a drunken rage, amongst other abusive and terrible things.

Stifler's Mom in "American Pie" (1999)

Regardless of how bodacious Stifler's mom is, this film is definitely one of the worst movies to watch with your mother! The story of four teenage boys entering a pact to lose their virginity by prom night is already a red flag. Imagine how awkward it would be to watch a mom who has sexual relations with your own friends! That would definitely be a nightmare, which is why Stifler's mom is on the list. She might not be abusive or cruel but she certainly does still sound terrifying.

Mary in "Precious" (2009)

Mary, played by Mo'nique in acclaimed film "Precious", played such a convincing cruel mom that she won an Academy Award for her performance. Based on the author's personal experiences, like in "Mommy Dearest", Mary treats her own daughter Precious like garbage, verbally and physically abusing her child because she was jealous of the father paying more attention to Precious, even though it was sexual abuse rather than fatherly love. Precious eventually breaks free from her mother's grasps but the way the mother was portrayed both disgusted us and made us empathise with her.
