4 Jun – According to the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM), there are plans to build more cinemas in small towns throughout the country, which is estimated to take two to three years to achieve. Minister of Communications and Multimedia, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, said that this will help encourage Malaysian citizens to appreciate films with their family. Additionally, this move will help address the failure of producers to generate income through box office revenues as building more cinemas means more opportunities for the locals to watch local films. "For me, some of the disadvantages that producers face are competing for screening slots with international films and the number of cinemas there are. These difficulties negatively impact on the revenue of the films," explained Ahmad Shabery. Ahmad Shabery went on to add that a cinema with a total seating capacity of 200 to 300 is enough to provide producers a fighting chance for their films. "The cinemas we are going to build doesn't necessary have to screen commercial Hollywood films, instead, they will be emphasizing on local films. They are premises that have to be built, and if private companies are not going to do it, the FINAS has to do it. The cinemas have to have an exciting and family-friendly concept as we don't want them to be deemed as negative places." Ahmad Shabery's visit to FINAS also saw him announcing the screening of Shuhaimi Baba's "Tanda Putera" on 29 August 2013, as well as a move towards digital television content. "We will be putting in infrastructures for digital television in Klang Valley in 2015 which can be used throughout the country in 2017." When implemented, it means that the digital television facilities will be used by existing terrestrial television stations such as the seven new channels under Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), including the channel under Media Prima Sdn. Bhd.
