23 Sep – Program coordinator of Pusat Komunikasi Masyarakat (KOMAS), Lena Rasathi Hendry, was charged under the section 6(1)(b) of the Film Censorship Act 2002 at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate Court for allegedly screening a documentary that has not been approved by Malaysia's Film Censorship Board. On 3 July, The Home Ministry raided the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall where KOMAS activist Anna Har, Arul Prakkash and Lena Hendry were screening the controversial documentary "No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields Of Sri Lanka". The three KOMAS activists were detained at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters overnight and released on bail the following day. Directed by Callum Marce, a British national, "No Fire Zone: The Killing Fields Of Sri Lanka" depicts the war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan army against the ethnic Tamil minority in the final days of Sri Lanka's 30-year long civil war.
According to KOMAS director Tan Jo Hann, "This is the utmost form of harassment and direct violation of freedom of speech, assembly and association by the Malaysian authorities guaranteed for under Article 10 of the Malaysian Constitution." The hearing starts on 21 October, and if found guilty, Lena can be fined no less than RM 5,000 and not more than RM 30,000 or be jailed for a period of three years. She is currently out on bail for RM 1000.
