How did this happen?

7 Feb – "Robocop" was a cultural phenomenon back in the day, so it was just a matter of time until Hollywood decided to reboot it to fit the modern age. Many times, the reboots would just be critically teased and audiences would take it or leave it.

This time, it attracted many Malaysian and Singaporean audiences over the weekend (31 January – 2 February), no matter how much the critics wanted Hollywood to stop, as "Robocop" peaked at number 1 in both weekend box office results.

"Robocop" takes place in 2028 Detroit, when Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) - a loving husband, father and good cop - is critically injured in the line of duty, the multinational conglomerate OmniCorp sees their chance for a part-man, part-robot police officer.

"The Monkey King" would have taken first place in Malaysia if it wasn't for "Robocop".

In second place for the Malaysian box office, "The Monkey King" beat out "From Vegas to Macau" which received third place. "The Monkey King" is based on selected chapters of Wu Cheng'en's classical novel "Journey to the West" and will tell the story of how the Monkey King rebels against the Jade Emperor of Heaven.

In the U.S., however, "Ride Along", "Frozen" and "That Awkward Moment" topped last week's box office charts in first, second and third place.

Other new movies that opened in Malaysia are "Hello Babies", "Jangan Pandang Belakang Boleh?", "The Pioneer", "Rummy" and "Inga Enna Solludhu".
