7 Feb – Director Wong Jing ("The Last Tycoon") is known for publicly making fun of how Stephen Chow Sing-Chi treated people and films, but "Journey To The West" was so good that Wong Jing was heard praising it in public. "I saw "Journey To The West", who said (Derek) Kwok Chi Kin was invisible? The story structure had his shadow everywhere. However Chow Sing-Chi's aura lingered all over the details. I guess the inspiration came from "Dreadful Truth Of Grimm's Fairy Tales", but with Mr. Chow's personality he definitely would deny that. Summation: Great Mix, I like it," said the 57 year-old director. "Journey To The West", also known in the West as "Journey To The West: Conquering The Demons", is Chow's first directorial feature that does not feature him in it. The film is a reimagining of the popular Chinese literature "Journey To The West", detailing the story of the monk Xuan Zang (Wen Zhang) who sets out to conquer the three demons that will eventually become his famed disciples. He is aided by the original character Miss Duan (Shu Qi), a beautiful and fierce fellow demon-hunter who is hopelessly in love with him. The film is laid out as the first of potential movie series, which may be why Chow has decided not to direct a sequel for one of his more successful films, "Kung Fu Hustle". Cinema Online held an exclusive screening of "Journey To The West" at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) Tropicana City Mall recently, and many fans were eager to nab the free passes! After the film, we asked a few of them what they thought about it:
