Hollywood can't get enough of vampire films and as filmmakers look for a way to milk in the cash cow that is the "Twilight" saga, vampire fans eagerly await for a worthy 'bloody' flick minus the sparkling vampires. Thankfully, the wait is not far off with the upcoming remake of 1985's "Fright Night" that stars bad-boy Colin Farrell as the mean vampire by the name of Jerry. "Fright Night" serves up to be a horror-comedy film with all the necessary elements, as it follows a teenager who discovers a vampire has moved in next door. However, if this film does not manage to quench your thirst, then here's a list of vampire films you can feast on!
The Lost Boys ("1987") Kiefer Sutherland stars as a mean motorcycle gang member/vampire in a story that follows a single mother and her two sons as they move to a new town. When the younger brother makes friends with some comic book geeks who claim to be vampire hunters, he starts to notice there may be a connection with the local motorcycle gang and the string of murders taking place in their town. It's not long after his older brother falls for a girl and begins to exhibit the classic signs of vampirism.
Interview With The Vampire ("1994") Who would have thought that both Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt would play vampires in a movie together? Based on the best-selling Anne Rice novel, the story follows Louis (Brad Pitt), who after the death of his wife and child, looses the will to live, only to be stalked by a vampire named Lestat (Tom Cruise), that turns him over to the dark side. The vampire duo then turn a young girl played by a very young Kristen Dunst into one of their own. The movie is narrated by Louis as he tells his life story to a curious reporter played by Christian Slater.
From Dusk Till Dawn ("1996") With Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney on helming the title, many was fooled into thinking that they were watching the usual bank robbery flick. Little did they know that the movie would be turned into a bloody vampire thriller with screen siren Salma Hayek playing the vampire seductress.
Dracula: Dead And Loving It! ("1995") Not all vampire films should be serious and intense, so we've included this comedy parody of "Dracula" that pokes fun on the vampire myths and films in general. Starring Leslie Nielson who plays Dracula, director Mel Brooks plays the nemesis to Nielson as Van Helsing. Although the movie seriously lacks any horror elements to it due to its comedic nature, the laughs this one of a kind feature manages to generate, is enough to put it on this list.
Blade ("2002") Wessley Snipes plays the titular character of Blade, who is born human with vampire genes and capabilities, thanks to a vampire who bit his pregnant mother. Unfortunately his mother dies from the attack, but Blade grows up to be a cool vampire hunter armed with super weapons, that's out for revenge, and blood of course. The film spawned 3 sequels and apparently a fourth one is in talks.
Underworld ("2003") Team Edward and team Jacob what? This movie was the first to exhibit and ongoing battle and tension between werewolves and vampires. Kate Beckinsale plays a vampire Selena, and her lover is a werewolf played by Scott Speedman. While the movie offers 2 stars that's easy on the eyes, the action fuelled storyline interestingly depicts the werewolf vs. vampire war that sadly, puts the teenage testosterone driven banter in "Twilight" to shame.
Van Helsing ("2004") Inspired by Van Helsing in Bram Stoker's novel, the film stars Hugh Jackman as the one and only vampire hunter and vigilante alongside Kate Beckingsale. Although the movie received fairly poor reviews, it is still enough to quench the thirst of vampire hungry fans and on the plus side, it also features other monsters such as Frankenstein's monster and werewolves.
Let Me In ("2010") This heartbreaking vampire tale is based on a novel and its following Swedish movie that led to an American adaptation. The story follows a lonely 12-year-old boy, who often gets bullied in school, to meet the new sinister girl (Chloe Moretz) in his apartment block. When the girl reveals herself to be a child vampire, they both form a friendship through their miserable broken lives and what ensues is definitely no child's play.
Daybreakers ("2009") A blend of "28 Days Later" and "I Am Legend", "Daybreakers" is a cold-blue-tinted futuristic thriller, where vampires have finally ruled the Earth leaving the human populace to wear thin. Since vampires now occupy most of the world, the supply of human blood is running out as they try to harvest humans and find a scientific way to help them survive. Ethan Hawke plays a vampire scientist who is looking for answers, while Sam Neill plays his father and Williem Dafoe a vampire cured and turned back to human. A vamp movie with a sci-fi twist? Nice.
Bram Stoker's Dracula ("1992") The Francis Ford Coppola adaptation of "Dracula" received positive reviews and featured an all-star cast that saw Gary Oldman as Count Dracula, Winona Ryder as Mina Harker, Keanu Reeeves as Jonathan Harker and Antony Hopkins as Van Helsing. The plot of the film stays close to the novel and where a young lawyer (Reeves) is assigned to a gloomy village in the mists of Eastern Europe only to be captured and imprisoned by the Dracula, who travels to London to woo Reeves' fiancée, Mina Murray. The film went on to win 3 Academy Awards.
