Five minutes with Shaheizy Sam

Shaheizy Sam.

With "Adnan Sempit 3" set to be released in local cinemas soon, fans would be glad to know that we previously revealed that Ismail Bob Hasim is on for "Adnan Sempit 4". The film is the third instalment of "Adnan Sempit", and continues the story with Adnan and Nadia, Bobby and Wawa getting married simultaneously. The two couples then undergo various issues associated with married life and the subsequent pregnancies. We caught up with Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian (ABPBH) winner Shaheizy Sam to talk about what it is like to play the bumbling and good-natured Adnan, how much longer he'd like to stay with the film series, the types of films he likes and his upcoming plans for Raya.

Cinema Online's interview with Shaheizy Sam was conducted at Restaurant Shogun, Sunway Pyramid on 30 July 2013.

Hi Shaheizy Sam, how are you doing?
Hi, I'm a little tired, but I'm doing fine, thank you.

So how is it like to play Adnan for the third time in the series?
It's great! Playing Adnan for me is very relaxing because he's such a simple and funny and stupid person. I don't mean that in a bad way, I meant that his traits make him endearing. In addition, I don't have to do any tough action stunts; I just have to crack jokes that are written in the script to people that I have worked with so many times like Intan Ladyana, Yana Samsudin and Along Raja Lawak.

How much longer would you like to stay with the film series? We heard that "Adnan Sempit 4" is already in the works.
As long as possible. As I said, playing Adnan is very easy for me, so I can do the films any time I want as long as the story is good. It's also part of my livelihood as an actor, in terms of the pay I get and the credit on my resume. There are people who know me as Sam, people who know me for "Songlap" and people who only know me as Adnan.

You've participated in all kinds of films from different genres. Which kinds of films do you prefer?
I prefer drama films over all the others. I like drama because they are the closest we can get to real life, and people are able to relate to it. It's not that there is no action or comedy in real life or that action or comedy films are unrealistic, but when you are dealing with action or comedy films, there is that potential to be unrealistic. For example, "Adnan Sempit 3" deals with real life issues like marriage and career, but at the same time, the comedy is slapstick. You don't see people get beaten up yet there is no blood, or someone's head twisting 180 degrees. In drama films, no matter how dramatic it is, whether they are screaming or crying, there are actually people like that.

What is the latest film that you've watched and liked?
Stand Up Guys, the one starring Al Pacino and Christopher Walken. It wasn't a very good film, but I liked it because it is not a very deep film and it's funny.

What are your plans for Raya?
I'll spend my first two days in Kuala Lumpur, and then I'll fly to Sandakan to celebrate with my sister and her husband. Her husband's family is from there you see.

What are your upcoming films after "Adnan Sempit 3"?
Currently I'm not filming anything. But I still have a few films that will be released sometime this year, which are "Kisah Paling Gangster" in October, "Manisnya Cinta Di Cappadoccia" and "Mamak Cupcake". I hope you guys will support me!
