6 Feb - Head over to the Laundry Bar at the Curve in Damansara this Sunday and catch a French film for free! Organised by Klue magazine and the French Embassy, the "Popcorn and Soda" event will be showcasing "Les Gout Des Autre" (The Taste of Others), directed by Agnès Jaoui.

"Les Gout Des Autre" is about three men – industrial plant owner Castello, his flute-playing driver Bruno, and his bodyguard Franck, who is married. The three men find themselves falling for three women and they have to make their choices on whether it is lust, or love. The 2000 movie stars Anne Alvaro, Jean-Pierre Bacri, Alain Chabat, Agnès Jaoui, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2001. The film also picked up the César Award for Best Film, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Writing that same year.

According to Pierre Laburthe, a representative of the French Embassy, there was no specific theme in choosing the movies. "We worked with Klue magazine who organises this event and selected French movies which are representative of the whole palette; a range of French cinema from comedy to intellectual films and social ones," Laburthe told Cinema Online. "We wanted to attract a wide audience, who don't usually to the cinema to see foreign movies. The Laundry Bar represents a 'cool' laid-back place, and (the movie) is free."

Have they done something similar before? "KLUE did it (Popcorn and Soda) with the British Council and then offered us to continue. It was a too good opportunity to be missed. So I am really pleased we are doing it and I hope the crowd will be too."

"I always wanted to do some regular screenings in addition to the French Film Festival, but rights of projections are a huge issue and cost a lot," he added, recalling the previous French Film Festival held last year in conjunction with Golden Screen Cinemas.

Last month, the 1988 "Le Grande Bleu" (The Big Blue), starring Jean Reno and Jean-Marc Barr, was screened at Laundry Bar to start off the "Popcorn and Soda" French film event. The film, directed by Luc Besson ("La Femme Nikita", "The Story of Joan of Arc"), is about a free-diving rivalry between two childhood friends Enzo (Jean Reno) and Jacques (Jean-Marc Barr), a rivalry which threatens their lives and their love for the sea.

Next month, look out for "Trois Couleurs: Rouge" ("Red") on 11 March (Sunday) which is about Valentine, a young model who becomes friends with a cynical, retired judge. The movie takes a look at relationships and perceptions between people.

In April, look out for the final film, "8 Femmes" ("8 Women"), directed by Francois Ozon. It is a comedy about eight women who became instant suspects when a man, whom they had been involved with, turns up dead in his house.

Entry is free of charge, with popcorn and Coke provided as well. So drop by this Sunday and for the next two months and enjoy these fantastique films!
