30 Oct – Maya Karin has traded her vampire fangs from the "Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam" films for a mermaid suit in the upcoming Malay romantic comedy "Duyung".

The local actress of German-Malay descent stars opposite Saiful Apek in the new fantasy movie, and had to endure three weeks of gruelling shooting in Sipadan Island, Sabah, although the KRU Films effort already boasts at least 200 CGI scenes. For the role, she had to have her feet bound and the special mermaid outfit employed in the film was rumoured to cost RM 250,000.

"Duyung" tells of social misfit Jimmy (Saiful Apek), who is a loner in his village. However, he is a kind soul who cares for the environment and does things like clearing rubbish. Jimmy also believes that his reward would be to meet a mermaid (Maya Karin), as the fable goes. However champion fisherman Kordi (Awie) pokes fun at his beliefs and also his dreams to get together with village beauty Aspalela (Yasmin Hani). However, the appearance of a mermaid in the village surprises the villagers and may play a key role in changing their lives.

"Duyung" stars Maya Karin, Saiful Apek, Yasin Senario, Yasmin Hani, Awie, Rosnah Mat Haris, Hafidzuddin Fazli and Abu Bakar Omar. It is scheduled for early 2008 release.
