22 Feb – "Ah Long Pte Ltd" opened in Singapore over the Chinese New Year and enjoyed a successful first weekend box office, reaping S$1.5 million approximately. This is reported to be a personal best for director Jack Neo, one of the most prolific filmmakers in Singapore. Idiosyncratic director Jack Neo has scripted, directed and produced a successful brand of comedies - namely "I Not Stupid", "Homerun", "The Best Bet" "I Not Stupid Too" and his last work "Just Follow Law" – all of which were significant hits at the Singaporean box office. "Just Follow Law" was also popular with Malaysian audiences back in 2007 when it premiered. "Ah Long Pte Ltd" is a light-hearted black comedy about the triad world and the money-lending business. Instead of approaching the subject of Ah Longs (illegal moneylenders) seriously, the movie takes on a humorous and sarcastic treatment. Following the retirement of her triad leader (Richard Low), a young lady, Li Hua (Fann Wong), tries to restructure her money-lending triad into a professional and 'loving' triad that stands against the use of violence. She also suffers a nagging mother and gets involved in a romance with Mr Fang (Mark Lee), an effeminate dance instructor cum image stylist. Although quirkily Singaporean in content, much of the movie was shot in Malaysia and features a number of Malaysian talents in supporting roles. Malaysian distributors Buena Vista Columbia TriStar Films were not available for further comment at the time of writing. "Ah Long Pte Ltd" dances into cinemas nationwide on 12 March 2008.
