"KL Drift" competes with "Water Horse" for top spot

4 Apr – With the widest release, Malaysian racing flick "Evolusi KL Drift" looks poised to challenge last week's champion "The Water Horse" for first place in local box office takings this weekend. Following the success of Hollywood drifting movie "Tokyo Drift", Syamsul Yusof's directorial debut adds a bit of local spice to the mix while staying true to the essence of drifting.

"My car is the hottest ride!" – a scene from "KL Drift"

"Making the movie was quite challenging as all the scenes were shot without using any CGI at all." – Syamsul Yusof
According to Syamsul, there aren't enough local action flicks as they are tough to make and require investing large amounts of money, but he felt he was up to the challenge. Hopefully he can deliver what the local audience wants since the disappointment of Ahmad Idham's "Impak Maksima". In "KL Drift", main character Zack's girlfriend Fasha breaks all traditions and makes drift racing her hobby despite the male dominance of the sport.

Cinemagoers have quite a variety of films to choose from this weekend in terms of genre as well as language. Other than Malay-language actioner "KL Drift", there is also Mandarin epic adventure "Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon" starring Andy Lau, Maggie Q and Sammo Hung. On top of that, there is Japanese manga-inspired thriller "L Change The WorLd", which made it into the top ten last weekend on sneak previews.

Another locally produced film is rollicking Tamil comedy, "Naana Neeya", which should do well in the coming weeks as the Tamil New Year falls on 14 April. Fans of fantasy can also catch Hollywood adventure movie "Nim's Island" starring child wonder, Abigail Breslin. The film is slated for release on Saturday, 5 April instead of the usual Thursday/Friday release, and sources close to the distributor say this is because the U.S. studio wants it to coincide with the U.S. release, as there is a significant time difference between there and Malaysia.

However, the big fight is still between the drifter and the creature feature. Let's see if made-in-Malaysia racing flick "Evolusi KL Drift" will be able to leave family-friendly "The Water Horse" in the dust.
