"Cicak-Man" turns into comic

30 May – It looks like our nation's very own superhero "Cicak-Man" is expanding his reach by transforming himself into a comic series. Although the idea of expanding the "Cicak-Man" franchise was mainly developed following the huge success of 2006's "Cicak-Man", the characters and stories in the monthly comic were created as a new facet of the Cicak-Man universe. The colourful 40-page comic debuted its first issue titled "Super Glam" at the Movie Carnival, LGF Oval 1 Utama, on 29 May. The title is taken from one of the characters in the upcoming sequel "Cicak-Man 2: Planet Hitam".

According to Yusry Abdul Halim, the man behind the creation of "Cicak-Man", the idea of expanding "Cicak-Man" to the comic world was to fulfil one of his dreams to see the superhero immortalised on printed sheets. After the success of his debut film in 2006, Yusry, who is also an ardent follower of Marvel comics and the like, is confident that the spanking new "Cicak-Man" comic can win the hearts of Malaysian comic lovers generally.

Norman Abdul Halim, Group CEO of KRU Studios, felt that this was indeed a rare moment in entertainment history, for it is not always that a comic that gets adapted into a movie and not the other way around. The comic, which is aimed at wider market shows good early potential as it already received a total of 30,000 orders for distribution around Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. As for the local market, KRU will be distributing it nationwide while for the Singapore and Brunei market, distribution will be handled by Singapore media giant, MediaCorp Publishing Pte Ltd.

Apart from Singapore and Brunei, the creative brothers also aim for a wider market including Indonesia as well as Europe. However, such markets would require them to have the comic translated into English or other languages so as to make it more applicable to a larger audience.

With such efforts, KRU is optimistic that the comic series is capable to add to the branding of "Cicak-Man" as a Malaysian icon to the international market. The "Cicak-Man" comic series is sold at RM5.90 nationwide, while in Brunei it is priced at BN$2.90 and in Singapore SD$2.90. The Malay language has been available in the market since 26 May, while following issues will be available for purchase on the fourth week every month.

Movie Carnival is on at LGF Oval, 1 Utama from 28 May to 2 June, 10am to 10pm daily.
