No.1 "KL Drift" smashes opening day record for local movies

7 Apr – There can be only one winner in the race to the top, and Malaysian-made car drifting flick "Evolusi KL Drift" was crowned king of the local weekend box office, raking in a whopping RM1.7 million in the opening weekend alone. The film is debutant Syamsul Yusof's first foray into the world of directing and it was also part of GSC Alamanda's official launch campaign.

"KL Drift" not only made the No.1 spot in its opening weekend, but it also broke the record in opening day collections at the local box office by RM50,000, previously held by Ahmad Idham's 2007 scare fest "Jangan Pandang Belakang". "KL Drift" raked in half a million ringgit on each of the first two days of release, with a further RM700,000 on the third, it is learnt from reliable sources. With the figures from neighbouring Brunei and Singapore yet to be accounted for, the total collection for the movie would easily recover its RM2 million budget, and then some.

Speaking to Cinema Online, Syamsul said: "I really never expected this movie to do so well. I'm very grateful to my parents and the media for their support. The success of ‘KL Drift' will give me the motivation that I need for my next movie, ‘Bohsia', which I will start shooting later this month!"

"KL Drift" registered a full house on a Sunday evening at Cathay Cineplex Cineleisure Damansara" when Cinema Online paid a casual visit.

L-R: Director Jack Neo and stars Koh Yet and Mark Lee meet the fans at Cineleisure to promote "Ah Long".
Debuting in second place is Hong Kong epic "Three Kingdoms: Resurrection Of The Dragon" which picks up where its predecessor "An Empress And The Warriors" left off, as it made a quick exit out of the top ten. The biggest jump of the week comes from Japanese manga-based flick, "L Change The WorLd", which climbed seven places from last week to claim the No.3 spot. Jack Neo's loan-shark comedy "Ah Long" displays amazing staying power in the top ten, and the Singaporean director's visit to three local cinemas on Friday couldn't have hurt box office takings. The Singaporean-Malaysian collaboration finds itself at No. 5, sandwiched between two kiddie fantasy flicks: "The Water Horse", ending its reign at the top by falling to No.4, and "Nim's Island", debuting on the charts at sixth place.

Katherine Heigl's wedding movie "27 Dresses" is currently the only rom-com in the top ten, and is slowly making its descent, falling four spots to No.7. The only other debut on the weekend charts is Tamil remake "Yaaradi Nee Mohini", making a respectable entry at the eighth spot. Thai horror "Deadly Ghost" drops to ninth place while sci-fi fantasy "The Spiderwick Chronicles" suffers the biggest decline in the top ten, falling six spots to sit at the bottom of the chart.
