19 Oct – Serving up four Deepavali movies in conjunction with the annual "Festival of Lights" celebration over the weekend, Surya's "Aathavan" was a hit at the Malaysian weekend box office as compared to "Peraanmai", "Blue" and "Main Aur Mrs Khanna". According to Mr Gopal Ponniah of Lotus Five Star, widest-release "Aathavan" carrying 50 prints was reported to be the biggest opening amongst the other three Tamil/Hindi films with very good response on the first day. However, it was noticeably stronger on the second day of Deepavali with about 15,000 to 20,000 ticket sales per cinema location. Meanwhile, online reports in Chennai, India have announced that all the tickets for the first three days have been sold out in most theatres. Starring actioner Surya Sivakumar, the movie is about the story of an assassin in Kolkata, where Nayantara plays as his lady love in this revenge flick.
Quirky animation "Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs" debuted in Malaysia last Thursday in both normal and 3-D version and could see it outgross all other movies, following the two week chart-topping success in the United States. In contrast, the slow weekend Deepavali crowd in GSC Mid Valley had sales much higher for Bruce Willis' "Surrogates" as compared to "Cloudy".
