Dance, Subaru!

Star Meisa Kuroki, described by director Lee Chi Ngai as "having very special facial features not at all typical of the cute Japanese-doll tribe. Her look is almost a shorthand exhibition of coolness, a prerequisite quality to portray our heroine. There's a stage play where she showed zealous energy and tremendous athleticism. Casting her in the role was halfway done by then."

12 Jun – Based on the best-selling manga by Masahito Soda, feel-good Japanese dance drama "Dance, Subaru!" will make a late release in Malaysia on 18 June 2009 after opening wide south side in Singapore back in May.

Produced by Bill Kong ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", "Lust, Caution" and the recent "Claustrophobia"), the movie stars Japanese beauty Meisa Kuroki along with other formidable actors and features a special appearance by Korean boy band TVXQ (also known as Tohoshinki) according to RAM Entertainment. The quintet recorded the album's theme.

According to the press release, the movie chronicles the story of Subaru and her twin brother Kazuma, who share a passionate dream in becoming ballet dancers despite a disapproving father. After Kazuma's death from a hereditary illness, dancing became Subaru's only happiness and she yearns to lose herself in dance. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she runs into cabaret owner Isuzu, who recognises the talent in Subaru and trains her. But to become a professional ballerina, Subaru has to overcome harsher challenges than just merely satisfying cabaret drunkards.

The last Japanese dance-related movie with a similar against-all-odds theme to have made Malaysia shores was the crowd favourite "Hula Girls" back in August 2009. "Dance, Subaru!" will also coincide with the Japanese Film Fest held at select Golden Screen Cinemas outlets.

"Dance, Subaru!" is still playing at select locations in Singapore and will open in Malaysia on 18 June 2009.
