10 Aug – "Papadom" directed by Afdlin Shauki made its pivotal mark at the 22nd Malaysian Film Festival, taking the award for Best Picture at awards ceremony held on 8 August 2009 in Dewan Canselor, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Although the film has yet to screen in cinemas, it has already received great recognition from the panel judges as it dominated four more awards, which are Best Actor for Afdlin Shauki himself, Best Actress for Liyana Jasmay, Best Original Story and Best Original Music Score. About the touching relationship between a father and his daughter, Afdlin hopes that the awards won will attract people to watch the film when it releases on 8 October.
Aside from "Papadom"'s success, the late renowned filmmaker Yasmin Ahmad scooped the award for Best Director. Despite her "Talentime" not winning Best Picture, it still managed to bag Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Mohd Shafie Naswip) and Most Promising Actress (Jaclyn Victor). Datin Orked Ahmad, who received the Best Director award on behalf of her sister Yasmin Ahmad, shared with the audience her memorable quote: "I make films to help us celebrate diversity and to respect it. I make films to perhaps remind us of the frailty of life to prepare us for eventual loss."
The awards ceremony paid tribute to the filmmaker by screening a short clip honouring Yasmin's work throughout the years and two song performances, "Angel" and "Pergi," taken off the soundtrack of "Talentime".
