16 Nov – Reportedly built at a cost of RM 16 million, GSC East Coast Mall in Kuantan opened for business on 12 November 2009 with 1,621 seats and 12 wheelchair spaces. This complements the existing 5-screen multiplex in Berjaya Mall Kuantan.
Located on the third floor in Zone 1 of the mall, this 9-screen outlet marks GSC's 23rd cinema in the country. Speaking at the launch on the night before, GSC General Manager Irving Chee said: "This outlet will be the first one in the East Coast with a 3-D digital projector system. We're installing that in Hall 7. That means, people in Kuantan will get to watch James Cameron's "Avatar" in 3-D come Christmas time."
Also present at the launch was Dato' Sri Tew Kim Thin (East Coast Mall), Dato' Zailan bin Abd Ghapar (East Coast Mall), Film Development Corporation (FINAS) delegates, GSC business partners, associates and members of the media. The night was graced by a character appearance of "Astroboy", GSC Distribution's upcoming release.
GSC East Coast opened simultaneously with the blockbuster release of "2012" and registered encouraging box office.
According to cinema manager Chia Hooi Cheng, many shows for the disaster epic was sold out over the weekend.
