"Slumdog Millionaire" is on

"Slumdog Millionnaire" picked up nominations for 11 BAFTA awards and 10 Oscars

31 Jan – As public debate rages on over the controversial British film "Slumdog Millionaire", Golden Screen Cinemas' distribution arm has snapped up the 2008 sleeper hit for a mid-February showing in Malaysia, albeit on limited release to less than ten screens.

Danny Boyle ("Trainspotting", "28 Days Later") directed the film, which has now invited attention ranging from defamation lawsuits from welfare groups to public statements from many Indian celebrities, the most prominent being Amitabh Bachchan.

Widely acclaimed in the West, the film however found no fans among some quarters, who deemed the film derogatory and offensive, painting India in a stereotypical bad light. Reports say that activists in Mumbai have organised protests against the film's title even, armed with "I Am Not A Dog" posters.

The drama-thriller is about an uneducated boy from Mumbai's impoverished ghettos who ends up on India's version of the popular 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' TV gameshow and somehow manages to answer very difficult questions in the run up to the 20 million rupee final question, prompting police to arrest him.

"Slumdog Millionaire" will play in cinemas come 12 February 2008.
