GSC for NU Sentral

10 Aug – Golden Screen Cinemas has signed an agreement to operate a 11-screen cineplex with at least four units of 3D screens in a new mall adjacent to the KL Sentral LRT stop, according to a press release from the leading cinema chain last Friday.

The 1,780-seater will be housed in the projected seven-storey NU Sentral Shopping Mall, which is still under construction beside KL Sentral Station (also known as Stesen Sentral), the hub of train transportation in Kuala Lumpur.

It is also understood that GSC will also collaborate with NU Sentral in attaining a Green Building Index certification for the entire shopping centre.

Although the outlet would be seen as direct competition to the closest cinema which is GSC's own flagship GSC Mid Valley just a few minutes drive away, early speculation from observers is that this development would pose more of a business threat to TGV KLCC, which is the up until now the only cinema that is clearly synonymous with an LRT stop.

On a related note, GSC's marketing department has also issued a statement that there will be an additional nine units of new 3D systems in several of its current 23 outlets by the end of August 2010 but declined to specify which locations. It is understood that this is in line with the current industry focus that is shifting due to the rapid growth of movies produced in 3D.
