30 May – A resurgent Odeon Cinema reopened to the public last week, as the standalone outlet on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur remains in the cinema business despite various changes since its erection by The Cathay Organization in 1936.
Although a large part of the building is now a shopping arcade selling snacks, clothes and electronic goods, the cinema portion is now refurbished to complement its 250-seater single hall and made to look like any other modern cinema in conventional shopping malls. According to cinema manager Ganesh: "The last known management on the premises was Pyramid Saimira Theatre Chain in 2010 but it is now under a new owner. We opened to the public on 27 May 2011 after much renovation and beautification works." Cinema proprietor and Antenna Entertainments CEO Ashraff Reza Anand told Cinema Online: "We hope to continue the great history of this place and also to serve the moviegoers market that is still going strong here throughout the years, despite the winds of change." A visit to the cinema on its opening weekend revealed that it was still undergoing touch-ups and the concessions counter was barely ready for business. Vacancy ads for cinema staff were posted on the exterior of the building.
