Will & Jaden Smith team up again

The pairing of Jaden and Will Smith was last seen for 2006's heart-warming father-son story "The Pursuit of Happyness"

5 Apr – Sony Pictures confirms that Jaden Smith will star opposite his father Will for M. Night Shyamalan's new sci-fi adventure, reported Entertainment Weekly.

Tentatively titled "One Thousand A.E.", the story is set 1,000 years into the future, where a young boy navigates an abandoned Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.

The screenplay is written by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta, with Shyamalan, Will Smith, James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ken Stovitz attached to produce.

"The chance to make a scary, science-fiction film starring Jaden and Will is my dream project," Shyamalan said in the press statement by Sony.

Will M. Night Shyamalan regain his storytelling magic with the Smiths for "One Thousand A.E."?

Will Smith added: "We're reading the script right now, I don't want to give it away because that wouldn't be tight, but it's set in the future and it's about a journey."

The two Smiths previously collaborated on two high-grossing Sony films, 2006's "The Pursuit of Happyness" and last year's (Jaden-starred and Will-produced) "The Karate Kid," which racked in a whopping US $307m and US $359m respectively.

However, writer-director Shyamalan has hit a rough patch recently, with the critically ridiculed "The Happening" and "The Lady in the Water" marring some of the artistic promise of "The Sixth Sense." His most recently directed film, "The Last Airbender", didn't escape the negative criticism, but still managed to gross US $320m worldwide.

As of yet, Sony Pictures Entertainment has not confirmed a release date, but production for "One Thousand A.E." is expected to begin sometime late this year after filming for Will's "Men In Black III" wraps up.
