"Prometheus" is not Europe's most wanted

"Madagascar 3" sees Alex and his friends meeting new friends in the circus like Gia the Jaguar.
13 June – In one of the most shocking weekend box office tallies in history, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" was seen sprinting like Gia the Jaguar towards the top of the charts and sat firmly there with US$60.3 million. It also made the record for being the fourth-highest opening of the year and the seventh-highest ever in June, successfully overcoming the issue that every film sequel faced. The third outing of "Madagascar" sees the motley gang attempting to return to New York City with the help of the Penguins, only to help up on a circus train bound for Rome and London, which lent a refreshing atmosphere to formulaic animated family comedy. In addition, the all-ages rating of "Madagascar 3" sealed the deal for its first place opening, considering the R-rating of Ridley Scott's "Prometheus". The latter opened in second place, which was hardly the monumental debut that everyone expected, although it did better than fellow R-rated titles and charted a new record for the "Alien" franchise. Meanwhile, the intense competition has chased Rupert Sanders' "Snow White And The Huntsman" all the way down to third place, according to sources at Box Office Mojo (7 to 10 June).

It appeared that Alex the Lion and his friends have a strong fan base in Malaysia as well, seeing as it had a first place debut here. However, instead of "Prometheus", local movie "Jalan Kembali: Bohsia 2" directed by Syamsul Yusof and starring the man himself, opened second. The crime drama is a sequel to "Bohsia: Jalan Pilih Jalan Hitam", about a group of young adults who are forced into the life of crime due to unwelcome circumstances, and as they try to escape, they run into more obstacles. Despite its strong opening in the U.S., Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" did not even make it into third place in Malaysia as the place was occupied by "Snow White And The Huntsman". Possibly because not only the film is a prequel to "Alien", it may have also been too convoluted for Malaysians as it centres on the crew of the spaceship Prometheus as they follow a star map that leads to a distant world, but instead of the origins of humanity, they discovers a threat that could cause the extinction of the human race.

The box office charts in Singapore are similar to the U.S., with "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" making the top of the list followed by "Prometheus and "Snow White And The Huntsman".

New movies that opened in Malaysia last week are "Prometheus", "X", "Fairy Tale Killer", "Shanghai" and "Manam Kothi Paravai".

In Singapore, new movies opening this week are "First Time", "Hate Story" and "Shanghai".
