Maya Karin to play psycho

Maya Karin is going from pontianak to psycho in "Jwanita".

28 Jun – Malaysian actress Maya Karin is excited that she gets to act psychotic in Osman Ali's upcoming film "Jwanita", instead of her usual roles of playing a pontianak or the damsel-in-distress.

In "Jwanita", Maya plays a woman who has been physically and mentally abused by her foster parents and as a result, suffers from a mental disorder. After murdering both her foster parents, she is sent for treatment with Doctor Farhan and ends up falling in love with him. However, her feelings are not reciprocated as Farhan turns out to be the fiancé of her biological sister Julaika, and in a fit of vengeance, she decides to crash the wedding day.

"I told Abang Osman that I don't want to play a ghostly character again," said Maya, who has been known for her otherworldly roles after her memorable turn as the vengeful pontianak in "Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam" and its sequel, "Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam II".

Maya said that she has refused to take any particular person as reference for her mentally disturbed role, fearing that she would imitate them too much.

"I want to follow my own instincts and express my own interpretation of the character," she said.

"Jwanita" is directed by "Jiwa Taiko" and "Ombak Rindu" director Osman Ali, with a cast that consists of Bront Palarae ("Jiwa Taiko"), Marsha Milan Londoh ("Cun"), and Cristina Suzanne. Principal photography is set to begin on 30 June.
