Whitney Houston dies

Legendary singer, Whitney Houston, passed away on 11 February, 2012.

13 Feb – Grammy Award-winning singer and "The Bodyguard" actress Whitney Houston was announced to be dead in the early hours of 12 February 2012, having passed the night before.

The tragic news came just hours before she was due to perform at a pre-Grammy party held by record producer pal Clive Davis.

The star was found lying in the bathtub in her fourth floor suite in the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles by the police.

The cause of her death is still unclear although a drug overdose was suspected.

Eyewitnesses' accounts stated that the 48-year-old singer had been acting suspiciously during the pre-Grammy Awards party rehearsals and ended the night looking intoxicated.

Whitney's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, was reported to be emotionally distraught after hearing the news, and made a dedication to her during his concert, in Mississippi, US.

The pair were married in 1992 and Whitney became pregnant with their first and only child together, Bobbi Kristina soon after. They divorced in 2007 amid reports of drug usage.

Whitney herself admitted this to television host and superstar Oprah Winfrey in 2009, and said that "I wasn't happy by that point in time. I was losing myself."

Besides singing, Whitney Houston has also dabbled in acting. Her debut role was alongside Kevin Costner in "The Bodyguard", for which she sang the Grammy-winning single, "I Will Always Love You".

Despite the news, the 54th Grammy Awards went ahead as planned, with stars Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Khan to performing a tribute to Houston at the awards.

Close friend Mariah Carey led the tributes to the star, expressing that she was "heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston.

"She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth."

Her last posthumous effort, "Sparkle", would see Houston once again, after 15 years, in August 2012 lend her voice and talent in the musical based on the lives of popular 60's music group, The Supremes.
