"Fast And Furious 6" drives to top

28 May – Unsurprisingly in Malaysia, "Fast And Furious 6" topped the charts over the weekend from 3 to 26 May 2013. Justin Lin returns to the helm after "Fast Five" for the sixth instalment, which sees Dominic Toretto and his professional criminal gang coming out of retirement when law enforcement agent Luke Hobbs offers to clear the group's criminal records and allow them to return home in exchange for helping him to take down a skilled mercenary organization led by Owen Shaw and his second-in-command, Dominic's presumed-dead lover Letty Ortiz.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" plummeted to third place while second place was taken by Blue Sky Studios' "Epic", an animated fantasy-adventure comedy-drama film loosely based on William Joyce's children's book "The Leaf Men And The Brave Good Bugs". The film tells the story of Mary Katherine, a teenager who is drawn into the world of the Leafmen, whose duties are to protect the forest while visiting her estranged and eccentric scientist father, Professor Bomba.

"Fast And Furious 6" also opened in first place in Singapore, followed by "Star Trek Into Darkness". Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" performed considerably better here than in Malaysia, as it maintained its hold on third place.

"The Hangover III" did not fare very well among critics.

In US, "Fast And Furious 6" grossed USD 120 million in first place, marking the highest opening in the 12-year history of the franchise. The film managed to beat "The Hangover Part III", which opened on the same weekend in second place. Rounding up the top three is "Star Trek Into Darkness".

Other new films that opened over the weekend in Malaysia are "Quartet", "Olli", "Bikers Kental", "Christmas Rose" and "Masani".

Other new films that opened over the weekend in Singapore are "Sammy 2", "Platinum Data", " At Any Price", "Christmas Rose", "Thale", "Emperor" and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow".
