Luhrmann wants DiCaprio in "Hamlet"

Renowned director Baz Luhrmann wants to direct "Hamlet" with Leo.

11 May – Australian director Baz Luhrmann, who reunited with Leonardo DiCaprio for "The Great Gatsby", with DiCaprio playing F. Scott Fitzgerald's all-American antihero lead, has revealed his intentions to collaborate with the actor again for "Hamlet".

"To me, Gatsby is the American Hamlet. What else could we possibly do as a follow-up?" he remarked.

Nothing is confirmed yet, though. "It's just a dream at this point," said the director.

Earlier, Luhrmann gave DiCaprio his significant breakthrough as a leading man by casting him as Romeo in his 1996 film version of Shakespeare's play, "Romeo + Juliet".

There have already been seven adaptations since the Second World War, with Richard Burton, Nicol Williamson, Innokenty Smoktunovsky and Ethan Hawke playing the leads.

Kenneth Branagh and even Mel Gibson had played the role, but Leonardo DiCaprio could be the next Hamlet to hit cinema screens if director Baz Luhrmann gets his wish.

Any future project is likely to depend on how well "The Great Gatsby" does in theatres, which will open this 16 May in Malaysia and Singapore.
