"Monsters" wins over movie-goers

"Monsters University" was well-received by movie-goers overall.

25 Jun – In a weekend (20 to 23 June) that had "Man Of Steel" and "World War Z", it seemed highly likely that "Monsters University" will be crushed, but Pixar's family-friendly animated film defied expectations and debuted in first place with USD 82.4 million in the U.S. box office. It is one of Pixar's highest openings ever, and Pixar's 14th consecutive number one debut. The film is the prequel to the 2001 "Monsters, Inc.", and takes place in the prestigious Monsters University, where Michael "Mike" Wazowski majors in scaring in order to achieve his dream of becoming a scarer. A chance meeting with fellow freshman James P. "Sulley" Sullivan ignites a rivalry between the two which turns into friendship.

Meanwhile, Marc Forster's "World War Z" also performed better than expected, despite the behind-the-scenes drama. The apocalyptic horror film tells the story from the viewpoint of Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), whose tranquil life with his family is upended when a zombie outbreak takes place, and Gerry is forced to leave them to help the authorities investigate the virus.

In third place is "Man Of Steel", which experienced an abnormally large drop over the weekend.

In Malaysia, however, it is a very different story. Movie-goers that were not satisfied with "Man Of Steel" turned to "World War Z" for their adrenaline kick, which led the film to debut in first place and "Man Of Steel" dropping to second place. "Monsters University" ended up in third place.

In Singapore, "World War Z" also topped the box office chart, followed by "Monsters University" and "Man Of Steel" in second and third places, respectively.

Other new movies to open over the week in Malaysia are "Intersections", "Tokak" and "Raanjhanaa".
