1 Oct – "Soekarno" film producer, Raam Punjabi has revealed that the schools in Bali, Indonesia will have their students watch the new biographical film, "Soekarno" for the next three months in order for them to know and learn about the founding father of Indonesia, President Sukarno. "If we don't have a movie of Sukarno, the new generation will not know the founding father of the country, the man who united the people of Indonesia, but now they will know!" said Punjabi.
"In Bali, the schools have organised that every day for the next three months, the students [in batches] will be watching the movie. I think it is great step! That was the initiative made by the Bali government. Now we are trying to do that in other cities as well," he added. The film chronicles the life of the first president of Indonesia who fought politically for the freedom of the people of Indonesia The film starts off from the day Sukarno was born, to the day he declared the Republic of Indonesia's independence.
Directed by Hanung Bramantyo and starring Ario Bayu in the titular role, "Soekarno" has won three awards at the 2014 Bandung Film Festival for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor. "These are the benefits you get when you make a great movie and the result satisfies you. You feel that you did a great job and now people are following your movie." said Punjabi. Distributed in Malaysia by TGV Pictures, "Soekarno" comes to cinemas this 2 October 2014.
