Disney moving forward with "Princess Diaries 3"

"The Princess Diaries" is getting a third instalment.

17 Jun – Hear ye, hear ye! Disney is finally set to crown a third instalment of the "Princess Diaries" franchise.

"The Princess Diaries 3" is officially happening, according to The Tracking Board. However, the studio is keeping a tight lid on further details such as the plot and cast, so there is no confirmation that Anne Hathaway will be reprising her royal role.

There is also a possibility of casting new faces as Disney intends to launch a reboot of the franchise, which had Hathaway and Julie Andrews starring in both the first and second movies.

Debra Chase of Martin Chase Productions, who previously produced the first two "Princess Diaries" movies, will be returning as producer once again. No word yet on who will be directing.

Based on Meg Cabot's 2000 novel of the same name, "The Princess Diaries" had Hathaway starring as teenager Mia Thermopolis, who discovers she really is a princess of Genovia, a kingdom currently ruled by her grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi, played by Andrews.

The 2001 movie made a global gross of USD165.3 million, spawning a 2004 sequel "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement", which received less positive reviews and earned only USD134.7 million worldwide.

[Updated : 19 June 2015] According to various reports today, a source "close to Disney" says the movie is not in the works, and there is definitely no reboot or remake happening anytime soon.
