Disney's "Mulan" turns live-action

Disney's 1998 animated film, "Mulan".

31 Mar – Following the successes of its live-action remakes, the most recent being Lily James-starrer "Cinderella", Disney is looking into turning another one of its classic animated films into a live-action hit.

"Mulan" reportedly is next in line to get the live-action treatment from Disney, according to The Hollywood Reporter, though there's no word yet on the movie's cast and release date.

The studio has recently bought a script written by Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that is based on the Chinese legend of female warrior, Hua Mulan. Disney's animated version was released in 1998 and told the story of a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to join the army.

Two recent Disney live-action films, "Cinderella" and "Maleficent".

Disney recently released "Cinderella" and the non-musical has so far collected USD335.7 million worldwide. Last year's "Maleficent", starring Angelina Jolie in the titular role, is a "Sleeping Beauty" remake told from the villain's point-of-view; it made a worldwide collection of USD758.4 million. 2010's retelling of "Alice in Wonderland" was the highest grossing thus far with its USD1 billion gross.

Currently in the works are the sequel "Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass", the live-action remake of "Jungle Book" and the live-action retelling of "Beauty and the Beast"; which has Emma Watson starring as Belle.
