8 Jan – Erotic romance film "Fifty Shades of Grey" finally receives an official rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and it is now officially rated R. According to ComingSoon, the R rating is due to the MPAA's feedback on the film which states the film has "strong sexual content including dialogue, some unusual behavior and graphic nudity, and for language." With the American rating, it remains to be seen whether the movie will make it to Malaysian cinemas. R-rated movies seldom get a place in the country, though some does manage to slip by.
"22 Jump Street", "Gone Girl", "Lucy", "Nightcrawler" and "Snowpiercer" are some of the R-rated movies that made it to the big screens in Malaysia and Singapore last year. Others weren't so lucky in Malaysia, such as "Sex Tape", "The Raid 2", "Let's Be Cops" and "'Under The Skin". Singapore however had no problems screening the films due to its existing R21 rating.
Starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, "Fifty Shades of Grey" is based on the erotic romance novel of the same name by E. L. James, the first book in the "Fifty Shades" trilogy, which started out as a "Twilight" fan fiction series. Though it received lackluster response from critics, its film adaptation is garnering steadfast fans the world over, as evident from the fact that the trailer was the most watched in 2014. "Fifty Shades of Grey" hits the big screen on 12 February 2015.
