29 Sep – "Hotel Transylvania 2" opened worldwide last weekend and immediately booked the top spot at the U.S., Malaysia and Singapore weekend box office for 17 to 20 September. The sequel to 2012's "Hotel Transylvania" sinks its teeth into some impressive achievements as it made a gross of USD48.4 million on its opening weekend in the U.S., making this a new September opening record as well as the highest opening of the year for Sony. Worldwide, it has so far grossed USD77.6 million. This is also the highest opening of his career for Adam Sandler – executive producer, co-writer and voice of Dracula – as it beats his 2005 "The Longest Yard" opening gross of USD47.6 million, Deadline reports. This marks a refreshing turn for the Sandler-Sony collaboration as their last movie, "Pixels", did not do as well as expected. Opening at number two last weekend was Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro's "The Intern", where the former plays the big boss to the latter, her senior intern. The comedy grossed USD17.7 million domestically, contributing to its worldwide gross of USD30.2 million, based on Box Office Mojo stats. The blazing trail of "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" was extinguished as it found itself pushed two spots down to number three, with its USD14.2 weekend gross, which brings its worldwide gross to a total of USD174.1 million.
Over in Malaysia, animated movie "Hotel Transylvania 2" also opened at number one while the local movie "Polis Evo" maintains its spot at number two. "Everest", which tells the harrowing tale of climbers caught in an unfavourable situation on the world's highest mountain made an impressive climb from number eighteen to number three in Malaysia last weekend. However, "Polis Evo" held its own as it also recently set a new record, having managed to collect RM8 million in just 11 days of showing in 101 cinemas across Malaysia and Brunei. Singapore's box office was conquered by new releases last weekend as "Hotel Transylvania 2" opened at first place while Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson, and Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer, "Everest", opened at second. Another newcomer, "The Intern" joined the chart at number three. Malaysia's new releases last weekend include "Jwanita", "The Intern", "The Green Inferno", "Girlfriend Kontrak", "Attack On Titan II: End Of The World", "Lost in Hong Kong", "Cooties", "49-O", "A Tale Of Three Cities" and "Calendar Girls". Other movies that opened in Singapore last weekend are "Boruto: Naruto The Movie", "Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon", "Office", "We Are Your Friends" and "Attack On Titan II: End Of The World".
