"Minions" says 'bello' at number one

"Minions" is no.1 in M'sia and S'pore, yet to be released in the U.S.

23 Jun – "Jurassic World" is still a mammoth presence at the weekend box office for 18 – 21 June, having now become the fastest movie to climb to USD1 billion global box office.

The record was previously held by another Universal movie "Fast and Furious 7", which managed to gross the number in 17 days. It will soon be surpassed by the dinosaur movie, taking only 13 days.

By this week, the Chris-Pratt starrer will pass the international, not including domestic gross, lifetime box office total of "Jurassic Park" – inclusive of first run, reissues and 3D, according to Deadline – a total of USD640 million.

At last count, on Sunday "Jurassic World" raked in USD987.2 million worldwide, based on Box Office Mojo stats, after grossing USD106.6 million on its second weekend at the U.S. box office.

Pixar's new animated movie, "Inside Out", turned the box office upside down as it debuted at number two. It made a weekend gross of USD90.4 million, making it the highest-grossing opening for an original, non-sequel movie. The movie, however, will only open in Malaysia and Singapore in August.

Espionage spoof "Spy" lost its foothold and slipped down a place to number three, making USD11.2 million over the weekend.

"Poltergeist" makes a scary debut in M'sia and S'pore.

Meanwhile, over on the other side of the world, little yellow henchmen have overtaken the box office. "Minions" opened at number one in Malaysia, though the "Despicable Me" spinoff has yet to open in the U.S. "Jurassic World" tumbled down a spot to number two, while a new horror movie, the same name remake of the 1982 "Poltergeist", now haunts the third place.

"Minions" has also conquered the Singapore weekend box office with the animated characters' nonsensical babbles. The new release pushed former box office champion "Jurassic World" down to number two. "Poltergeist" managed to make a haunting debut at number three.

Malaysia's other new releases last weekend are "Eli", "Wonder Mama", "Parasyte Part 2", "ABCD 2" and "Papa's Shoe".

Whereas for Singapore, other movies that opened last weekend are "Wonder Mama", "Eli", "ABCD 2", "Barely Lethal" and "Careful What You Wish For".
