MovieGoGo brings Cinema-On-Demand for Malaysia

Founder of MovieGoGo, Alan Chong, Yasmin Ahmad's sister Datin Orkid and filmmaker Hassan Muthalib.

5 Feb – Malaysian start-up, MovieGoGo brings Malaysians the Cinema-On-Demand platform which allows audiences to request and pick the movies they would like to see playing at their local cinemas.

A crowdfunding based platform that has long existed in North America, is now introduced for Malaysians who can watch movies that are usually not shown in cinemas like; Classics, Documentaries, Anime or even popular movies that they have missed seeing at the cinema so they could request for a rescreening.

Speaking of the Cinema-On-Demand mechanics, MovieGoGo founder Alan Chong said, "As long as there are people requesting for the movie via our Facebook and also our website, we will do our best to bring the movie to cinemas provided that we can meet the minimum amount of attendees and ticket sales for the screening to be held."

Once a movie request is submitted to MovieGoGo and is approved by the cinema, the campaign will begin on MovieGoGo's crowdfunding web-platform with its ticket sales. If the minimum amount of attendees for the screening is met, then the movie will be shown. If it does not meet the minimum, then the screening will be called off and no one will be charged.

its
10th year anniversary this year.
A concept similar to the crowdfunding site Kickstarter, MovieGoGo plans to start their ticket prices from RM15 onwards and depending on the movie, different ticket packages will come with different deals along with the movie ticket.

In conjunction with the launch, the first movie MovieGoGo will be bringing to the cinema is the late Yasmin Ahmad's "Sepet" this 13 March 2015 at 7pm at Cathay Cineplex Damansara.

As the movie also celebrates its 10th year anniversary, the cast of the film will be in attendance during the screening for a Meet and Greet session and for a special panel discussion led by filmmaker and Yasmin Ahmad's close friend, Hassan Muthalib.

There would also be a pop-up museum displaying items from Yasmin Ahmad's Kong Heng museum.

Tickets to attend the "Sepet" screening range from RM15 to RM100 and is now available on MovieGoGo's website.

Proceeds from the "Sepet" screening would be channeled towards the maintenance of the Yasmin Ahmad museum in Kong Heng, Ipoh, for which MovieGoGo aims to raise at least RM10,000.

Yasmin Ahmad's sister Datin Orkid Ahmad who was also present at the MovieGoGo launch held at Leo Burnett's Kuala Lumpur office yesterday, revealed that the cost of maintaining the museum takes up about RM70,000 per year.

"This is the cost of just maintaining the place. It does not include rent as the owners of the building have graciously allowed the museum to be housed there for free. We hope that with the donations received, we would be able to keep the museum and also rotate the exhibits of the museum to change every 4 to 6 months for visitors to experience something new."

Also in-line with introducing new additions to honour the late filmmaker, Datin Orkid revealed that they are working on an augmented reality experience for which they plan to launch by mid this year.
