"Tomorrowland" lands on top

"Tomorrowland" takes top spot on the U.S. and S'pore, second spot in M'sia.

26 May – For a Disney movie, "Tomorrowland" did not make as big a splash in the pond as expected as it barely managed to debut at number one in the U.S. and Singapore, and only managed a second placing at the Malaysia box office chart for 21 to 24 May.

The Brad Bird-directed Disney original movie, based on Disney's very own theme park attraction and starring George Clooney and Britt Robertson, performed below expectation at the box office with its weekend gross of USD33 million in North America.

This still places it at the top of the U.S. chart but it is a weak collection, prompting the raise of the question whether moviegoers now only flock toward sequels, reboots and comic or novel adaptations. This could present a problem for original movies to find a place at the box office.

Previous weekend chart-topper, "Pitch Perfect 2", earned less than half of its opening gross, making USD30.8 million last weekend to place at number two. Third place now belongs to "Mad Max: Fury Road" with its USD24.8 million weekend gross.

"Spy" tickled some funny bones in M'sia and S'pore last weekend.

Over in Malaysia, "Tomorrowland" failed to make its mark at the top spot as another new release, "Spy", sneaked its way onto number one. The Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham and Jude Law-starrer seized first place on its opening weekend, leaving the Disney movie to debut behind the spy comedy. Last week's warrior, "Mad Max: Fury Road", is now parked at number three.

However, "Tomorrowland" sees a bright future in Singapore as it managed to open at number one, while "Pitch Perfect 2" slid one spot down to number two. Right behind the a cappella sequel, "Spy" managed to infiltrate the top three, landing squarely on third place.

Malaysian cinemas also saw these new releases for last weekend: "Big Game", "Demonte Colony", "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", "Gangnam Blues", "Murmur of the Hearts", "Dia" and "Jendela".

Meanwhile, other new movies that opened in Singapore last weekend are "Faeryville", "Demonte Colony", "Tanu Weds Manu Returns", "Out of the Dark" and "Parasyte Part 2".
