"Shrek" may get more new movies

Are there more "Shrek" movies in the making?

15 Jun – Audiences who miss laughing out loud at the antics of a certain grumpy ogre and his pesky donkey will be happy to hear that there might be more of the comedic duo coming to the big screen in the near future.

NBC Universal chief Steve Burke recently revealed the plan for more "Shrek" movies during the Guggenheim TMT Symposium in New York, according to Deadline.

Burke stated that Illumination Entertainment's Chris Meledandri will have creative control.

"He is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect "Shrek" and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises," said Burke.

The first "Shrek" movie was released back in 2001, with Mike Myers voicing the titular green ogre. Other cast members include Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona.

The success of the animated movie spawned three sequels, "Shrek 2" (2004), "Shrek the Third" (2007) and "Shrek Forever After" (2010) and a 2011 spin-off, "Puss in Boots".

While the franchise was a box office success, with worldwide collection ranging from USD500-800 million, it did not exactly end on a high note with the fourth "Shrek" instalment receiving negative to mixed reviews.

However, it seems that NBC Universal is confident that the franchise still has enough of its magic to warrant a fifth movie and possibly more.

The company plans to produce as much as four movies per year following its acquisition of DreamWorks Animation, which NBC Universal, a subsidiary of media giant Comcast, acquired for USD3.8 billion back in April.
