"Jurassic World 2" hunting for a director

Bayona was involved in "The Impossible" and "The Orphanage".

20 Jan – When Jurassic World broke the record with 1.6 billion USD worldwide, Universal knew they had another hit franchise they could continue.

The sequel for the dinosaur thriller is expected to be released in June 2018 but director Colin Trevorrow won't be returning to direct the sequel as he has signed on to helm "Star Wars Episode IX" for LucasFilm. However, Trevorrow was involved with the scripting of the dino sequel.

The studio is searching for a new director and Deadline has reported that Juan Antonio Bayona is the one expected to take over.

He was rumoured to be involved in the project since September last year before he accepted the "World War Z 2" job. However, he left the "World War Z" sequel last week due to timing constraints.

It is also reported that Bayona has a "close relationship" with super producer Frank Marshall, but despite that, there has been no offer, and there haven't even been any real talks on the matter.

So while it sounds like the studio may be interested in the director, at the moment no action has been taken.

Bayona is known for his work in horror with "The Orphanage", "Showtime's Penny Dreadful", and the upcoming dark fantasy "When a Monster Calls". He also directed disaster drama "The Impossible".
