3 May – Social media is currently abuzz with the hashtag #KamiSokongKamil as industry players took to Twitter, Instagram and the likes to show their support for National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) Director General Dato' Kamil Othman. "#kamisokongkamil for the better change he brings and for the greater good of the creative and entertainment industry," posted actress Lisa Surihani, one of the many local talents who have shown their support online. "Dato Kamil is the right and the most apt leader as Finas's KP. We COLLECTIVELY support him," she added.
The hashtag went viral after it was revealed that Dato' Jurey Latiff Rosli, president of Federation of Film Artistes' Associations of Malaysia (GAFIM), previously submitted a letter to Datuk Seri Dr. Mohd Salleh Tun Said Keruak, Minister of Communication and Multimedia, on 8 March to voice out his dissatisfaction with FINAS' administration.
Jurey's action had reportedly prompted the Film Directors' Association of Malaysia (FDAM), Malaysian Accredited Association of Commercial Filmmakers (PPFIM), Professional Film Workers Association of Malaysia (PROFIMA), Malaysian Society of Cinematographers (MySC) and Post-Production, Animation & Creative Content Association Malaysia (POSTAM) to leave GAFIM.
It has also popularised the hashtag #TakdokJureyAntaroKito – a play on Jurey's name, which in this context would mean 'there is no gap between us' – to show non-support for the GAFIM president. Dato' Kamil is set to address the issue in a meeting with the media tomorrow.
