15 Jan – After sweeping major awards at the recent Golden Globes, "The Revenant" is showing its roaring power once again as it comes out top on the Oscars 2016 nomination list. The Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer garnered 12 nominations in total. That's two more than second lead, George Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road", which is nominated in 10 categories. Coming in third is "The Martian", with 7 nominations. All three are, of course, part of the contenders for Best Picture. Apart from "The Revenant" – which had a limited opening weekend ahead of its wide release to qualify it for this year's Oscars – another December release, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", also managed to garner as much as five nominations.
Hosting the prestigious awards show this year is actor-comedian Chris Rock, returning to the stage after more than a decade. The 88th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on 28 February 2016.
