Best Picture blunder caused confusion between the "La La Land" and "Moonlight" cast and crew during the acceptance speech.

27 Feb – The 89th Academy Awards has recently wrapped up and below we have the full winners list!

Hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel, the awards ceremony was held at the famous Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, where once again the golden statuettes were handed out to the winners of each of the 24 categories being contended.

The prestigious movie event was also livened up with performances of all five songs nominated in the Best Song category.

Justin Timberlake opened the show with a rendition of his "Trolls" soundtrack "Can't Stop the Feeling", before handing the mic over to Kimmel, who delivered his opening monologue effortlessly.

Kimmel started with "Oh good, I got a sitting ovation," before taking a swing at Donald Trump – asking everyone to unite in face of the diversity his presidential decisions have caused to date – and, leading by example, proceed to "bury the hatchet" with his frenemy Matt Damon, making fun of the latter's decision to star in the box office dud "The Great Wall" instead of taking the lead role in Oscar-nominated "Manchester by the Sea".

Making a reference to last year's Oscars, which was deemed too 'white' a.k.a. racist, Kimmel also cheekily noted that this year's Oscars is more balanced, "Black people save NASA and white people save jazz."

The show went on with the awards presentation and more performances, including Grammy-winner Sting singing "The Empty Chair" from "Jim: The James Foley Story", "Moana" star Auli'i Cravalho performing the animated movie's "How Far I'll Go" with actor-composer Lin-Manuel Miranda and John Legend singing both nominated "La La Land" soundtracks, "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)" and "City of Stars".

With 14 nominations under its belt, musical film "La La Land" was expected to be the biggest winner of the night. However, despite winning in six of the categories – including making Damien Chazelle the youngest ever to win Best Director at the age of 32, "La La Land" ultimately lost the coveted Best Picture award to "Moonlight".

However, the win for "Moonlight", the Barry Jenkins-directed movie which also won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting actor for Mahershala Ali, was a surprise twist for the awards ceremony this year.

Everyone was already celebrating the win for "La La Land", announced as the Best Picture winner by presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, when in the midst of the cast and crew's acceptance speech, a correction was made with "La La Land" producer Jordan Horowitz announced that "Moonlight" was the real winner.

Beatty later explained that the card in the envelope that he received said 'Emma Stone, "La La Land"', which was why he hesitated to announce the winner at first. Viewers who were watching the show live would have noticed his moment of hesitation and might have mistaken it as him building up the suspenseful moment before announcing the winner.

Kimmel wrapped up the Oscars nicely as he stepped up to the mic to apologise for the blunder, absorbing the blame himself and joked, "Don't worry, I will not be back next year."
