"Split" star Anya Taylor-Joy set for "X-Men" spinoff

Anya Taylor-Joy is finally confirmed to play Magik in "New Mutants".

12 May – You've waited long enough; now watch your endless patience bear fruit as Fox's "X-Men" spinoff, "New Mutants", finally kicks into gear.

Starting off is the casting choice of the movie. Now that the movie has been completely greenlit, no time was wasted to confirm "Split" star Anya Taylor-Joy as a member of the "New Mutants".

The 21-year-old has been cast as the mutant Magik, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Taylor-Joy, who has long been rumoured to play the role, is now confirmed to portray the mutant who is a master in sorcery and travels using teleportation discs.

Magik also happens to be the sister of Colossus, one of the two X-Men members that appeared in 2016's "Deadpool". You know the big one that's made from steel. (Is it too much to hope for a "New Mutants"-"Deadpool" crossover?)

"New Mutants" was the first "X-Men" comic spinoff, created in the 1980s. Members of the "New Mutants" were as diverse as they were cool, including a Native American, a Brazilian ladies man, a Kentuckian and a robot alien.

Taylor-Joy's own character is Russian. While she isn't Russian, the American-born Argentine-British actress isn't 100% American either.

The casting directors wanted to make the cast of the film as diverse as its characters; which is probably one of the reasons why they roped in British "Game of Thrones" star Maisie Williams to play the Scots mutant girl, Wolfsbane-other than her phenomenal acting, of course.

The film's script is written by Knate Lee and Josh Boone, the latter also doubles as the film's director.

"New Mutants", scheduled to start filming this July, is set to be released in North American cinemas on 13 April 2018.
