Malaysian producers want stricter action to combat online piracy

18 Dec – Malaysian Film Producers Association is urging the government to take a more decisive action against online piracy.

The association's Vice President Burhanuddin Md Radzi, stated In an interview recently that they were very concerned over the recent widespread practice of illegally downloading and distributing copyrighted content digitally, especially through various platforms including Facebook and YouTube.


"If this goes on, the film industry will not survive as we will not be able to make any profit from our investments. This will lead to producers deciding to no longer invest in movies. It will not only affect the actors, but thousands of others working in this industry," he said.

Burhanuddin stressed that FINAS as a representative of the film industry should sit down with several other governmental agencies to strategise on resolving the problem and ensuring the industry will continue to prosper.


"Upin & Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal" was the latest victim of online piracy

Burhanuddin, who is also the Managing Director of Les' Copaque Production - the company that became the latest victim of this illegal activity after its latest film, "Upin Ipin: Keris Siamang Tunggal" was uploaded online, stated that they have already identify several individuals involved in the case.

The company has also decided to take legal action as a lesson to others to not repeat the same offence.
