12 Apr – Derek Tsang believes that the lack of empathy is the reason for the bullying and hate crimes that are happening in the US and other parts of the world right now.
The Hong Kong filmmaker and son of prominent Hong Kong filmmaker Eric Tsang, who spoke to Deadline' Dino Day Ramos as part of the "Awardsline" segment of the said news agency, stated that it was the core issue when it comes to the recent surge of hate crimes against Asian community in the US since the pandemic started.
"A lot of time it's the lack of communication or the lack of will to understand each other... that's really the core issue there," he said.
On the other hand, the director, whose movie "Better Days" is nominated in the upcoming Academy Awards' Best International Feature Film, stated that he was intrigued by the story told in Jiu Yuexi's novel, "In His Youth, In Her Beauty" of which his film was based on.
"It's heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. When we first started writing the script, we tried to provide an answer to why people bully. But after interviews and research, I really can't provide any answer. It's part of our human nature," he said.
