14 Jul – The Kristine Stewart-starrer, "Spencer" is set to have its world premiere in competition at the Venice International Film Festival. The movie, written by "Peaky Blinders" creator Steven Knight and directed by Pablo Larraín, centres around Princess Diana as she deliberated on ending her marriage with Prince Charles during the Christmas holiday at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk in 1991. It is noted that movies that have won the Venice top prize in the past have also been nominated at the Oscars, including "The Shape of Water" and "Nomadland".
Stewart is not the first actress to have ever played Lady Diana on the big and small screen, with Naomi Watts portraying the beloved princess in 2013's "Diana" and Emma Corrin playing her in the fourth season of "The Crown". In a previous interview, Stewart stated, "Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life. It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name: Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her." Aside from Stewart, "Spencer" also stars Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins, Sean Harris, and Jack Farthing - the latter as Prince Charles. The 2021 Venice International Film Festival will run from 1 to 11 September.
