PM Anwar Ibrahim touched by "Anwar: The Untold Story"

9 May – The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim admitted that he had mixed emotions watching the story of his life on the big screen.

Anwar, who appeared at the premiere of "Anwar: The Untold Story" along with wife and fellow politician Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, stated that the movie reminded him of all the struggles he had to go through in the past after he was sacked as the Deputy Prime Minister back in 1998.

"I am only human. I feel too, but just like my wife said in the movie, we have to control it and not to show our sadness to the public. When I was in prison, I only cried once, and that was when my mother passed away. That one I couldn't control. But for the most part, I was laughing in tears," he said.

Anwar admitted that it would have been difficult for the production to tell a whole picture in just an hour or two, but that he let the moviemakers add their own creative take on the film.

"This can only be done through diligence, intelligence and experience of the production team," he added. "Because this is art, there must be creativity. We give a bit of freedom (to films) because I believe there should be a little space of freedom in movie-making."

The movie, starring Farid Kamil in the role of Anwar Ibrahim, is based on the politician's life, from the time he was appointed as the Financial Minister in 1991 to his sacking in 1998.
