4 Oct - Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil recently revealed that they have requested the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) to study the implementation of KOBIS, the acronym for the Korean Box Office Information System.

KOBIS, said Fahmi, is managed by the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) since 2004 and is designed to capture accurate and real-time information related to ticket sales and movie audience figures from cinemas.

"Through accurate data and reporting, they can identify the issues facing the film industry as a whole," he said. "I see openness and transparency in the data aspect, and this is a matter that I have asked FINAS to study carefully and we need to discuss how it can be implemented in Malaysia."

Fahmi revealed that FINAS has previously informed the Ministry that they had to wait for quite a long time to get a report that was not in real time when it comes to figures from the movie theaters.

Fahmi, who was on a three-day working visit to South Korea, held a meeting with Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) Chairman Park Kwang-su, Korean Film Council (KOFIC) Chairman Han Sang-Jun and Busan Cinema Center CEO Kim Jae Hin, to exchange ideas and cooperation plans.

This includes screening films from Malaysia through the film festival that they will be hosting next year.

"They also informed us about the first artificial intelligence (AI) film festival they are organising, and maybe we can learn to include Malaysian AI films or learn some technical aspects that can be utilised in the future," he said.
