25 Nov - In an electrifying sweep, the supernatural dramedy "Hungry Ghost Diner" has captured an impressive nine nominations at the illustrious Festival Filem Malaysia (FFM) Ke-33, building on its earlier triumph as the 2023 NETPAC Award winner.

The spotlight shines brilliantly on breakout star Chen Keat Yoke (affectionally known as Yoke), who has landed a coveted Best Actress nomination for her compelling portrayal of "Bonnie." Adding to the film's remarkable achievements, visionary first-time feature writer-director Cho We Jun has clinched a nomination for Best Newcomer Director.

For Yoke, this recognition marks an extraordinary culmination of her artistic evolution from singer to screen sensation. Her stunning lead debut in "Hungry Ghost Diner" has captivated critics and audiences alike. Her emotional reaction says it all: "I can't believe it... I'm going to cry my heart out tonight!"

The film's creative excellence has been recognised with eight additional nominations: Best Cinematographer (Tan Teck Zee, MySC), Best Editor (Teh Rou Ning), Best Music Composer (Teoh Eng Hooi), Best Sound Designer (Ashwin Gobinath), Best Picture (producer: Lim Benji, co-producer: Lee Yve Vonn), Best Screenplay, and Best Original Story.

At its heart, "Hungry Ghost Diner" weaves an enchanting tale of Bonnie, a food truck operator unexpectedly stranded in her hometown during a pandemic lockdown. When she takes shelter in her family's old coffee shop, she discovers it's haunted by her ancestors' spirits, returning for the mystical Hungry Ghost Festival.

The film's international journey has been nothing short of spectacular. After its world premiere at South Korea's Bucheon Fantastic Film Festival in 2023, where it claimed the prestigious NETPAC Award for Best Asian Feature Film from the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC), it embarked on a triumphant festival tour.

Audiences were captivated at Italy's Oltre lo Specchio Film Festival, the International Film Festival of India Goa, Philippines' QCinema International Film Festival, and the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

As anticipation builds for the FFM gala at Auditorium Seri Angkasa, Angkasapuri Kota Media, Kuala Lumpur, on 7 December, fans can catch a special screening at GSC Mid Valley on 5 December, featuring an exclusive Q&A session with the creative minds behind the film.

"Hungry Ghost Diner" is currently available on streaming (Netflix in Southeast Asia, Apple TV worldwide).
